OEM Audi Belts, Pulleys & Brackets

Three types of belts help run the many parts of an Audi vehicle: serpentine, drive, and timing. The serpentine belt moves alternator and power steering parts, among others. It works with a crank pulley, an idler pulley, and a tensioner. Drive belts, also called V-belts, pass through and help run the water pump, radiator fan, and other systems. They run off the crank pulley. The timing belt helps keep auto parts from colliding with one another. It does so by making sure the camshaft runs in sync with the crankshaft. Newer Audi models, though, have a timing chain that does this job instead.

How to Detect Problems With Your Vehicle's Belts

No belts lasts indefinitely, though. They can go bad, owing to use and age. Luckily, there are signs to tell you that's happening. They include:

  • For your serpentine belt: cracks and shallow groove depths. If you start to see the latter, use a belt-wear gauge to inspect the belt. Do this every 60,000 miles. Replace the belt, however, every 90,000 miles or so.
  • For your drive belts: excessive looseness or tightness. If you see either, try to adjust them. If you can't, however, or if a belt has cracked or begun to squeal, you probably need to change it. The same goes for if you're having alternator problems or your engine is overheating.
  • For your timing belt: general damage. In such cases, change it. Otherwise, be sure to replace it about every 60,000 to 90,000 miles. Timing chains, though, should last the lifetime of an engine.
  • If you're still not sure when you should change belts in an Audi car or SUV, you're in luck: the maintenance schedule in your owner's manual ought to have more info.
