OEM Audi Control Arms & Parts
Control arms are integral parts of the front suspension on your Audi. They're also called "A arms." Some cars and SUVs have two upper and two lower control arms -- a total of four. They connect the frame or body of your Audi to its wheel assembly by a steering knuckle, using rubber pieces that flex, called control arm bushings. These allow the control arms to swing vertically as your front wheels and tires cross bumps and potholes or go over other road hazards. A control arm's outer end connects via a ball joint, a part either permanently attached, or bolted or pressed in for replacement separately.
What Control Arms Do
In short, they keep your front wheels on the road reliably. Sooner or later, though, even a top-quality Audi control arm can wear out, bend, or get damaged. In that condition, your vehicle isn't safe to drive.
Signs of Failing Control Arms
Thankfully, there are signs to look for when a lower control arm is going bad. They include loss of control, a pop or clunk when speeding up, slowing down, or driving over obstacles, and drifting when braking or driving across uneven terrain. These can indicate degraded ball joints or ripped control arm bushings, and both can cause your front wheels to separate from your suspension completely. If you've got these symptoms, lift your Audi on a hoist and inspect it to find the problem. It's a good idea to do this at least once a year.
