How Braking Works

The braking process starts with a master brake cylinder. It passes brake fluid through brake hoses and brake lines to each brake caliper. Each of these clamps a brake pad (in older Audi models, a brake shoe) onto a brake rotor. The pads and rotors rub together, generating friction. This friction is what slows wheels and stops tires from spinning. A control module or wheel speed sensors may also take part, depending on the Audi model you drive. Sooner or later, though, even top-quality OEM brakes go bad, even those Audi makes.

How to Spot Bad Brakes

Fortunately, there are signs of brake problems you can look for. More than just a dashboard brake warning light turning on, too. They range from atypical brake noises and shuddering when braking to a soft or abnormally low-feeling brake pedal. Worse symptoms include reduced brake grip, taking longer to stop, and even your Audi pulling sideways during braking. The worst sign is grinding noises. They often indicate brakes gone bad, with real-time rotor damage happening because of worn-out pads. If you're having brake problems, run an inspection.
