For your Audi to stop, its brake calipers need to clamp its brake rotors and produce the friction needed to slow its wheels and tires. They can't create that friction, however, without a reliable set of OEM brake pads.

The Types of Brake Pads

There are four. Organic brake pads are for everyday driving. They're economical, good friction generators, they aren't hard on rotors, and they make very little dust. Ceramic brake pads, however, are longer-lasting. They work well whether it's hot or cold out, produce very little noise, and their dust resists sticking to wheels. Metallic brake pads are even better performers. They continue to excel at high heat, offer a firmer braking feel, and they resist fade. Carbon fiber brake pads are top-of-the-line. They're exceptionally rugged, working superiorly at higher temperatures to deliver maximum stopping power. Cars and SUVs can use any of them, but, since ceramic and carbon fiber pads disperse heat best, sports cars and performance SUVs use them most often.

When to Replace Your Audi Brake Pads

When you should change brake pads depends on how you drive your Audi and where. There are signs they're worn or going bad, though: damaged surfaces, dashboard brake warning lights, brake whines, and longer stopping times. Vibration or grinding noises when braking is often the worst-case scenario: uneven wear caused by warped rotors, if not the real-time onset of brake rotor damage. Otherwise, you should replace your brake pads roughly every 40,000 to 50,000 miles. The best way to identify brake problems is to run an inspection.
